Farm Scene: I created this for my youngest sister Jessica. I personally love farm and rural scenes, and enjoyed this project. The design was taken from a Walnut Hollow Farms woodburning pattern book. The pictures illustrate the process used when applying only shading to a finished product.
Step 1: The first step in creating a woodburning is to select and transfer a pattern to the wood. In this case, I selected a design from a Walnut Hollow Farm pyrography book. The pattern is transferred using graphite paper. I always use a red pen so that I can see what I've traced.
The picture below shows the entire design traced on the wood, and it's ready to burn.
Step 2: Typically, but depending on the design, I will burn the outline of pattern. The picture below shows the results after an hour of work.
Step 3: Once the outline is completed, I use variable temperatures, pressure and/or speed with the pen to provide shading.
And, voila! It's done! I add a few coats of a sealant or varnish, and the finished product is gift ready!
Harvest Basket: This is a burning I did for my sister Samantha. It is a beginner to intermediate level project that illustrates the use of color. This design was also taken from a Walnut Hollow Farms pyrography book.
I used the same techniques above to trace the pattern to the wood. Below is the burned outline of the pattern.
This design lent itself nicely to color. I used Walnut Hollow Farm oil pencils to add color.
